Fed: sass & bide inspired by friend's cancer battle: Middleton
EDS: Embargoed until 0500 (AEDT) on Monday, February 18
SYDNEY, Feb 18 AAP - Fashion designer Heidi Middleton has told how the death of a friend
to cancer has had a profound effect on her and her label, sass & bide.
While Middleton was winning her battle with breast cancer last year her friend Kate
Boyson, 32, was being overwhelmed by a particularly aggressive type of sarcoma.
Ms Boyson died in October, five months after her initial diagnosis, leaving a husband
and two children.
In an interview to be aired today on ABC Television's Australian Story, Middleton speaks
about her cancer treatment and her friend's death.
"I really didn't believe that Kate was going to die." she said.
"It wasn't until the week before she left that the reality hit.
"And that was definitely without a doubt the hardest period of that whole year.
"And one of the hardest things to go through in my life.
"I really just felt complete disbelief, and still do in a way."
Sass & bide returned to New York's fashion week this month after skipping it last year.
Their latest collection, entitled Rainbows for Kate, is a tribute to Middleton's friend.
"It is a tribute to her and what she meant to me and what our friendship meant to me,"
Middleton says.
"The collection really started with a beaded bracelet that I made and gave to Kate.
"And each coloured bead represented a different emotion.
"It's really all about life, love. The strength that Kate showed and the courage.
"For me, she is woven into every piece of that collection. And her spirit is, you know,
is not forgotten and will never be forgotten."

Swm: Phelps matches Spitz seven with stunning 100m fly
By Rebecca Bryan
BEIJING, Aug 16 AFP - Michael Phelps stared down history today, matching Mark Spitz's
magical seven gold medals at one Olympics with a defiant victory in the men's 100m butterfly.
Phelps, seventh at the turn, snatched victory by one-hundredth of a second over Serbia's
Milorad Cavic, pounding the water in triumph and screaming with delight when he realised
the enormity of his achievement.
"I feel a little bit of everything - relief, excitement, everything," Phelps said.
"I had to take my goggles off to make sure the '1' was next to my name."
The 23-year-old American phenomenon, who had appeared invincible as he set six world
records in winning his first six golds at the Water Cube, displayed the sheer force of
his will as he made up a deficit of more than half a second in the final lap to win in
50.58 seconds with Cavic second in 50.59.
Serbian officials protested the result, but swimming's ruling body FINA reviewed the
race and ruled that the one-two finish stood.
Cavic had challenged Phelps even before the race began.
As the American took up his familiar pre-race stance alongside his block, facing the
side of the pool, Cavic stood by his own block and faced him.
The two stood stock still and staring until the starter called them onto the blocks,
but at the finish it was Cavic who blinked - and missed gold.
"When I saw the 50.58 and the 50.59 and I saw the '1' next to my name, that's when
I sort of let my roar out," Phelps said.
As Cavic reached for the wall, Phelps gambled with one more stroke.
"I actually thought when I did take that half stroke, I thought I had lost the race
right there, but I guess that was the difference in the end," said Phelps, who added he
didn't realise how close it was.
"I had no idea," he said. "I was starting to hurt for the last 10 metres. It was my
last individual race and I just wanted to finish as strong as I could."
Australian Andrew Lauterstein was third in 51.12.
It was the only one of Phelps's five individual events in Beijing in which he both
started and finished without the world record, which still belongs to fourth-placed compatriot
Ian Crocker.
With his seventh gold medal, Phelps matched the record that US swimmer Spitz established
with seven victories at the Munich Olympics in 1972, and will have a chance to break the
mark when he swims the 4x100m medley relay tomorrow.
"I think the biggest thing is when someone says you can't do something," Phelps said
of his determination in pursuing a record once thought unassailable.
"It shows that anything is possible when you put your mind to it."
Phelps has won gold here in the 100m and 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m individual medley,
200m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x200m freestyle relay.
Phelps, who won six gold medals in Athens, had already moved ahead of Spitz on one
score here. He surpassed the US swimming icon, along with Games greats Carl Lewis, Paavo
Nurmi and Larysa Latynina, who were tied for the Olympic record of nine career gold medals.
With his seventh Beijing triumph Phelps took his career total of Games gold to 13.
Britain's Rebecca Adlington broke the oldest swimming world record on the books, winning
the women's 800m freestyle in 8:14.10.
She erased the 19-year-old record of 8:16.22 set by Janet Evans on August 20, 1989 in Tokyo.
Adlington, who snatched the 400m free gold at the final touch, crushed her opposition
in this one with over six seconds to spare.
"I'm so happy," she said. "It wasn't like the 400, I knew I'd won. It's absolutely unbelievable.
"If anyone would have said before the Games that I'd win two golds and break the world
record, I'd have laughed in their face."
Italian Alessia Filippi took the silver in 8:20.23 and Lotte Friis of Denmark claimed
the bronze in 8:23.03.
Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe finally added gold to the three silvers she had won so
far in Beijing, setting a world record to retain her 200m backstroke title.
Coventry clocked 2:05.24, bettering the world mark set by Margaret Hoelzer at the US
trials in July. Hoelzer took silver in 2:06.23 and Japan's Reiko Nakamura earned the bronze
in 2:07.13.
Cesar Cielo Filho gave Brazil it's first Olympic swimming gold with a victory the men's
50m freestyle gold in 21.30sec.
Amaury Leveaux was second in 21.45 with fellow Frenchman, and 100m free gold medallist,
Alain Bernard third in 21.49.
"It was my best race ever," said Cielo, who shared bronze with Jason Lezak in the 100m
free and broke down in tears on the podium as the Brazilian anthem played.
World record-holder Eamon Sullivan of Australia finished a disappointing sixth.

Fed: Campbell gives Bald Hills wind farm go-ahead = 2
Senator Campbell said in light of the changes to the reconfiguration of the 52 turbine
wind farm in South Gippsland and strict conditions to ensure protection of threatened
and migratory species, the proposal had been approved under the Environment Protection
and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
"My concern with the initial wind farm proposal was the risks posed to the threatened
orange-bellied parrot, which I believed were unacceptable," Senator Campbell said in a
statement.
"I appreciate the acknowledgement by the proponents in their varied proposal of the
concerns relating to the orange-bellied parrot and other species and appreciate the changes
proposed to address those risks.
"In particular, the proponents have moved six turbines that were previously within
two kilometres of the coast to ensure that there is no impact on the migratory path of
the orange-bellied parrot."
Senator Campbell said a commitment had also been made to closely and constantly monitor
the impact on the parrot and other species and to implement procedures to mitigate any
potential impact in accordance with the latest and best advice.
"My approval of the Bald Hills wind farm is subject to adherence to these commitments
and a number of other conditions to protect threatened and migratory species," he said.
These conditions included wind turbines or related infrastructure not being constructed
within 300 metres of the boundary of the Bald Hills Wetland Reserve or within 800 metres
of the edge of the largest area of open water habitat within the Bald Hills Wetland Reserve.
Also, wind turbines may not be constructed within two kilometres of the coastline and,
to ensure the long term protection of listed threatened and migratory species, the proponent
must prepare and submit for the minister's approval an avifauna management plan, including
the identification of a qualified independent observer to undertake monitoring on site
of listed species using the site and any birdstrike.
Senator Campbell said that, having thoroughly considered all information presented
to him in relation to the proposal, he was satisfied the strict conditions attached to
the approval would address the risk to threatened species that may use the area.
"I considered very carefully the 160-plus public comments and advice from relevant
experts, including the advice of Biosis that the risks to orange-bellied parrots could
be adequately managed through the changes to and conditions placed on the proposal," he
said.
"Consideration of any project that may have a significant impact on matters of national
environmental significance, including nationally threatened and migratory species, will
always need careful consideration on a case-by-case basis.
"Wind energy has an important role to play in Australia's developing renewable energy sector."

Apple's Steve Jobs on stage for first time since transplant
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs returned Wednesday to the showman role that has helped define his company leadership, taking the stage for the first time since his medical leave to announce such new products as an iPod Nano that records video.
Jobs, who had a liver transplant this spring from a young adult who died in a car accident, got a vigorous standing ovation from many in the audience.
Looking thin and speaking quietly and with a scratchy voice, the 54-year-old CEO urged everyone to become organ donors.
"I wouldn't be here without such generosity," Jobs said.
Jobs had not appeared at such a product launch event since last October. He bowed out of his usual keynote at the year's largest Mac trade show in January and went on leave shortly thereafter for nearly six months.
At an event for journalists, bloggers and software partners, Jobs announced updates to Apple's iTunes and iPhone software and unveiled a new iPod Nano with a built-in video camera.
Phil Schiller, Apple's top marketing executive, also took the stage to announce price cuts and storage boosts to existing iPod Touch models.
Few chief executives are considered as critical to their companies' success as Jobs has been to Apple's since 1997, when he returned to the company after a 12-year hiatus, and Apple's stock has soared and plunged on news and rumors of his health.
Shares in Apple reached a 52-week high of $174.47 in Wednesday trading, then fell to close at $171.14, or $1.79 below Tuesday's closing.
Jobs, whose medical problems began more than five years ago and included treatment for a rare form of pancreatic cancer, seemed happy to be back in the spotlight, saying, "I'm vertical, I'm back at Apple and loving every day of it."
As was expected, Apple's announcements were mainly tied to music players and the iTunes software, though Jobs spoke briefly about the iPhone and said 30 million of the devices had been sold so far.
Apple compared the new video-camera Nano to Cisco Systems Inc.'s Flip Mino, a tiny, simple video recorder that sells for $149, just like the basic, eight-gigabyte version of the overhauled Nano (The 16 GB Nano costs $179). The Nano - the smallest iPod that has a screen - also has a microphone, a pedometer, a 2.2-inch display and an FM radio tuner.
Meanwhile, the new version of iTunes, known as iTunes 9, gives people more control over what content gets loaded on to iPods and iPhones. It lets five computers on the same home network share - by streaming or copying - music, video and other content, a departure from the strict copy protection Apple insisted on in the past.
Michael Gartenberg, a technology analyst with the Interpret market-research firm, said Apple met "reasonable expectations" with its Wednesday announcements.
"If you were expecting an Apple jetpack or an Apple hovercraft, or even an Apple tablet, you didn't get that," Gartenberg said, referring to speculation that Apple was producing a "tablet"-style device resembling a giant iPod Touch.
At the close of the event, Jobs stepped from the stage and lingered for a few moments, chatting with Apple executives and a few fans who surrounded him.
"People see he's alive and well," Gartenberg said. "Had he not shown up, he would have been the elephant that wasn't in the room."

Fed: Beazley feels little pressure to change uranium policy
SYDNEY, April 7 AAP - Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says he feels little pressure
to change Labor's policy on uranium mining in Australia.
Key Labor figures, including the party's resources spokesman Martin Ferguson, have
pushed for the party to overturn its long-standing policy opposing new uranium mines.
An agreement between Australia and China this week has opened the way for uranium exports
to the Asian superpower.
Mr Beazley today said he felt little pressure to change Labor's policy, which would
serve Australia sufficiently for the foreseeable future.
"I don't feel under any enormous pressure from (Prime Minister John) Howard on the
subject of the Labor Party's uranium policy," Mr Beazley told a business lunch in Sydney.
"Under that policy, the expansion of Roxby Downs and the creation of the Honeymoon
mine is possible in South Australia.
"The production from them will easily take up all that can be foreseen in the medium
term in terms of demand on uranium exports."
Uranium should only be exported from Australia under strict conditions, he said.

Apple Unveils Radical Design For the IMac; New Model Comes Out As Sales Have Slumped
Apple Computer Inc. chief executive Steve Jobs today unveiled a radically new iMac desktop computer that the company hopes will do for sales what the distinctive machine does for computer design.
The new iMac looks nothing like what Apple has been selling for the past three years, or just about any other desktop computer. It consists of a smooth white base about the size and shape of half a basketball, with a pivoting metal arm holding up a 15-inch flat- panel liquid-crystal display.
"It has a beauty and a grace that is going to last the next decade," Jobs said as he showed off the machine at the Macworld Expo trade show here.
The introduction of the new computer comes as sales have begun to slump for the iMac in its original, bulbous configuration. The iMac is Apple's consumer offering for the masses; 6 million have been sold since the product was launched in 1998. In more recent times, though, sales have dropped from 571,000 in Apple's fourth fiscal quarter of 2000 to 294,000 in the same quarter of last year.
Industry analysts say the company needs to reverse that trend if it is going to expand its tiny share of the desktop computer market, which most estimates place at 4 to 5 percent in the United States.
"It looks pretty good," said Daniel Kunstler, a senior analyst with J.P. Morgan in San Francisco. "I do think there is a market- share opportunity."
The Macworld audience, primed by a week of teasers at Apple's Web site ("Count on being blown away"), reacted with cheers, oohs and aahs as Apple's $1-a-year chief executive touted the new model's features.
"I think it's gorgeous," said Pat Fauquet, director of Washington Apple Pi, a local Mac user group. "I wish I could buy it today."
She can -- Apple is already taking orders. The machines come with a fast G4 processor and, in its most expensive version, a "Super- Drive" that can record DVDs as well as CDs. A $1,799, SuperDrive- equipped model ships at the end of the month, with $1,499 and $1,299 versions due in February and March.
The design calls to mind the Power Mac Cube, an earlier, unsuccessful attempt to sell a computer in a small, stylish case. But the new iMac sells for a lot less than the Cube ever did and comes as an all-in-one bundle.
The iMac does, however, cost more than many Windows-based computers.
Analyst David C. Bailey, with New York-based Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co., cited the "relatively high entry price" of the new iMac, saying, "We would expect the demand for the new iMac by non- Apple users to be relatively modest for the next six months."
On the other hand, Bailey said most PC users aren't shopping for computers at all now -- so Apple can focus on owners of older Macs. Predicting there is enough money to be made that way, Bailey recently raised his forecast for Apple from "hold" to "outperform," going against most other analysts' predictions.
Jobs's two-hour keynote also included demonstrations of software for Mac OS X, Apple's replacement for the two-decade-old classic Mac operating system, and news that Mac OS X will be the default operating system on new Macs. He also announced lower prices on the iBook laptop and showed off a new iBook with a larger, 14-inch screen.
But his presentation's core theme was Apple's "digital hub" strategy of turning the Mac into an essential tool to view, create and share digital pictures, music and movies.
This has become a popular theme in the computer and consumer- electronics industry. The Consumer Electronics Show, running this week in Las Vegas, will feature several other companies' visions of this concept.
For instance, WebTV founder Steve Perlman is unveiling his new company Moxi Digital's set-top box, which combines cable and satellite TV tuners, a digital-music jukebox, cable-modem Internet access, a personal video recorder for TV broadcasts and a DVD player. The Washington Post Co. is an investor in Perlman's firm.
And tonight Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates was scheduled to demonstrate software for Windows XP that lets it control a home- theater system.
Jobs's contention, though, is that Apple can better deliver what other companies promise because it makes the hardware and software and can tune both to work together elegantly.
As evidence, Jobs offered Apple's new iPhoto program. Available now as a free download off Apple's site, iPhoto lets Mac OS X users easily import, organize and share photos taken with digital cameras. The program includes online links to order reprints and, for $30, a 10-page hardbound book of their photos.
The trick for Apple will be to persuade Windows users that they're missing something. Jupiter Media Metrix Inc. analyst Billy Pidgeon expressed skepticism about Apple's ability to convert PC owners; at most, he said, Apple's new products "may help when people are trying to decide one way or another."
To refute that sort of view, Jobs offered up a crop of numbers in his keynote to show Apple's think-different strategy is working: 125,000 iPod MP3 players sold in the first 60 days, a sale of 36,000 iBooks to the state of Maine for every seventh- and eighth-grader, and the observation that 40 percent of computer sales in Apple's stores are going to non-Mac owners.
Jobs did not talk about updates to Apple's Power Mac desktops, which have seen little change this year. For now, the desktop line continues to top out with the dual-processor 800 MHz machine Apple announced last July -- a speed limit that's begun to nag many Mac users.
But Fauquet, with Washington Apple Pi, said she could live with that for now, considering everything else that Jobs unveiled. "Was it enough to make us happy today? Yes."

PrintReady, based on Extensis' award-winning Preflight Online technology, is a new family of products that dramatically simplifies preflighting making it a seamless part of the file submission process. Extensis can be located at the Seybold Conference and Expo at booth number 701.
The product line includes a product for designers and small workgroups (priced below $400), and two enhanced packages aimed at service providers, large printers and publishers. All three PrintReady packages are available for purchase immediately from the Extensis website at http://www.extensis.com/printready.
PrintReady is a complete quality control/file delivery solution that provides designers, publishers and printers with the perfect solution for preparing, collecting and sending print-ready files. Less expensive and easier to use than traditional preflighting software, PrintReady catches potential problems, such as embedded fonts and missing images, before files are submitted to a printer, saving users time and money.
"When designers hear the word preflighting they generally think `root canal' because until now, it's been a tedious and painful process," said Joseph Schorr, senior product manager for PrintReady. "PrintReady totally changes this. It turns preflighting into a seamless part of the file submission process, explains potential problems in plain language, and delivers print jobs directly to their destination."
PrintReady also offers a significant advantage for service providers, who wish to provide preflighting capabilities to their clients. Instead of buying and installing software for each customer, a service provider can buy one PrintReady Service Provider Edition account, customize the branding, and deliver preflighting to every customer -- for less than $2,000. In addition, administration of the account is completely centralized, enabling a service provider can set up inspection profiles that are applied on every users desktop -- with nothing to manually install or configure.
The PrintReady family of products includes:
-- PrintReady, the lowest-cost package, saves designers, printers and publishers time and money by offering built-in preflight, file collection and FTP capabilities through an easy-to-use web interface. Interactive `help' function shows users how to fix potential printing problems and customizable profiles allow them to fine-tune preflight reports. The PrintReady license includes up to five users and an unlimited number of workstations. This product includes free updates and upgrades. PrintReady offers an unlimited number of file inspections. -- With PrintReady Service Provider Edition, printers, service bureaus, and publishers can provide customized preflight, collection and file delivery capabilities for their customers without requiring them to buy or configure anything. PrintReady allows for complete customization of the user interface, job tracking and reporting on a user-by-user basis. PrintReady Service Provider Edition includes up to 12,000 file inspections annually and includes free updates and upgrades. -- With PrintReady Enterprise Edition, printers, service bureaus, and publishers can provide customized preflight, collection and file delivery capabilities for their customers without requiring them to buy or configure anything. Its ability to store and post results of each preflight inspection in XML format allows for full integration with existing online job tickets and customer databases. In addition, the Enterprise Edition includes a 24-hour Platinum Maintenance Agreement and up to 30,000 file inspections annually. PrintReady Enterprise Edition includes free updates and upgrades.
Pricing and Availability
The PrintReady product line is available now for download from the Extensis web site and is available for a suggested retail price of $349.95US for the PrintReady product, $1,999.95US for the Service Provider Edition, and $9,999.95US for the Enterprise Edition. These prices reflect one year of PrintReady service that can be renewed on a yearly basis for a suggested retail price of $99.95US for PrintReady, $599.95US for Service Provider Edition, and $4,999.95US for the Enterprise Edition. JAWZ Inc. Divests Calgary e-Business Group to Rubicon; New "Centient Solutions" to Focus On e-Business Services and Products.
Business Editors
FAIRFIELD, N.J. & TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 2001
JAWZ Inc. (NASDAQ:JAWZ), a leading provider of secure information management solutions announced today that it has entered into an agreement with respect to the sale of the JAWZ e-Business group based out of Calgary, Alberta to Rubicon Investment Group and JAWZ e-Business management.
Rubicon has renamed the e-Business group "Centient Solutions Inc."
"In order for JAWZ to meet its business objectives in a competitive and growing security marketplace, we need to focus available capital and resources on our core competency of IT security," said Robert Kubbernus, Chairman and CEO of JAWZ Inc. "The friendly sale of our e-Business group is clearly a win-win situation for both JAWZ and Centient. Both organizations will be able to commit resources to developing and servicing a market by focussing on their respective core competencies, while maintaining a partnership to service the diverse needs of both blue-chip client lists. JAWZ' divesture of the e-Business group allows us to further reduce our overhead costs while retaining valuable client relationships that we have developed since inception."
"The estimated annual savings per year through the divesture of the e-Business group will be significant," added Kubbernus "Although some impact to our revenue will occur, the direct and related expenses will effect our net results positively. This divesture serves a dual purpose; first, it helps us accelerate our goal of profitability within 2001, and second, research published in early 2001 indicates that clients in the e-Business space have shifted away from the 'end-to-end' model to a more niche focused one, while clients seeking IT security services still prefer an end to end security provider. The divesture of the e-Business team allows us to quickly react to these changing market needs while still offering a breadth of services through separate providers."
"We're excited about the opportunities at Rubicon's Centient Solutions," said Raghu Kilambi, co-founder and General Partner at Rubicon. "We believe the former JAWZ e-Business group is a sound business opportunity with a blue chip client base in Canada and the US. We envision that JAWZ and Centient will continue to work closely together, each focussing on their core competencies."
"Centient Solutions is delivering leading-edge e-Business solutions and has a world class team. We look forward to working together with this exceptional group in servicing not only current e-business clients, but also taking advantage of the wealth of opportunities that are available and growing the business," said Greg Nuttall, co-founder and General Partner at Rubicon Investment Group.
Effective May 10, 2001, Rubicon, together with senior managers, Lawrence Gordey, President of Centient Solutions, and Soon Chong, Vice President, Professional Services, will purchase the JAWZ e-business group for $500,000 (Canadian) and invest substantial working capital to strengthen operations and move forward with new ventures. The new Centient Solutions will maintain its nearly 35 employees and contractors on staff.
In connection with the acquisition, Mr. Kilambi has resigned from his position on the JAWZ Board of Directors. JAWZ would like to thank Mr. Kilambi for his contribution over the past several months.

Behind Apple's products is longtime designer Ive
Ive, a self-effacing 44-year-old Brit, helped Jobs bring Apple back from the brink of financial ruin with the whimsical iMac computer, whose original models came in bright colors at a time when bland shades dominated the PC world. He later helped transform Apple into a consumer electronics powerhouse and the envy of Silicon Valley with the iPod, the iPhone and, most recently, the iPad.
In the wake of Jobs' resignation as CEO, Apple must show that it can keep churning out head-turning products even without its charismatic leader. Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, is now CEO, taking on the role of Apple's public face.
But in many ways the real pressure will fall on Ive to make sure Apple continues its string of gadget successes.
Ive, known to his friends as "Jony," has led Apple's design team since the mid-'90s. Working closely with Jobs, Ive has built a strong legacy at Apple, ushering in products that are sleek and stylish, with rounded corners, few buttons, brushed aluminum surfaces and plenty of slick glass.
Apple's pride in this work is evident even in the packaging: Open up any iPhone box, for example, and see Apple proudly proclaim, "Designed by Apple in California." Six of Ive's works, including the original iPod, are even part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
People who have worked with Ive describe him as humble and sweet, quiet and shy, but also confident, hard-working and brilliant. Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design for MoMA, said she knows "hardly anybody that is so universally loved and admired" as Ive.
"Products have to be designed better now for people to buy them because of Jony Ive and Steve Jobs and Apple," Antonelli said. "All of a sudden people have gotten used to elegance and beauty, and there's no going back."
Design, as well as software that makes the gadgets easy to use, is a crucial part of setting Apple products apart from those of its rivals. Apple didn't make the first music player or smartphone, but it blew past rivals by making ones that looked cool and worked well.
Ive started out far from Apple Inc.'s Cupertino headquarters. He grew up outside London and studied design at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) in Newcastle, England. After finishing school, he co-founded a London-based design company called Tangerine. There, he designed a range of products including combs and power tools. It was through Tangerine that he first got to work with Apple.
In 1992, while Jobs was still in the midst of a 12-year exile from Apple, the company's design chief at the time, Robert Brunner, hired Ive as a senior designer. Thomas Meyerhoffer, who worked under Ive at Apple in the '90s, believes Ive came because he understood Apple was different from other computer companies.
"He came to Apple to take that even further," Meyerhoffer said.
And Ive did, but not right away. Ive quickly became a leader, working as the creative studio manager and helping to build Apple's design team during a period in which the company struggled to innovate.
Apple declined requests for an interview with Ive. But during a 1999 interview with The Associated Press, Ive said that for years, designers would produce foam models of computers only to be sent back to their drawing boards because of managers' fixations with focus groups and marketing figures.
"We lost our identity and looked to competition for leadership," Ive said at the time.
Brunner left in 1996 and suggested that Ive take over the post, even though Ive was only 29. When Jobs returned from his exile and became interim CEO in 1997, he named Ive as senior vice president of industrial design.
With Jobs again at the helm and Ive as his style guru, Apple refocused around design and produced a hit that got the company back on track. Apple shook up the personal computer industry in 1998 with the candy-colored all-in-one iMac desktop, the original models shaped like a futuristic TV.
Unlike previous product attempts, the iMac concept was immediately embraced by the top decision makers at Apple, and the design went through very few revisions.
"We knew we had it when we saw it, and with Jobs' support we were able to make it happen," Ive said in 1999.
At a time when most computers were boxy and largely black, beige or gray, the iMac was bulbous and flashy. People snapped up 150,000 of them in the first weekend following its release. Apple sold 800,000 iMacs by the end of the year.
The iMac changed the way consumers thought about personal computers and about Apple itself. It gave Apple a vital boost that helped it usher in a new era of consumer electronics that were quirky, fun and colorful. The marketing team even teased consumers by encouraging them at one point to collect all five — strawberry, blueberry, grape, tangerine and lime.
With Ive in charge of design, Apple then bought out the first iPod in 2001, the iPhone in 2007 and the iPad in 2010. In recent years, the company has largely dropped the bright color palette (though you can still find it on some iPods) in favor of black, white and silver hues. Yet they retained simplicity that made them approachable to everyone — from the tech geek to Grandma — as well as the curves, shiny surfaces and expensive appearance.
As a result, Apple's products are more popular than ever, allowing the company to surpass rival Microsoft Corp. last year as the most valuable technology company in the world.
"He wasn't responsible for them, but they definitely couldn't have done them without him," said Leander Kahney, who has written about Apple in several books and on his "Cult of Mac" blog.
Ive and Jobs have worked hand in hand and, in many respects, have contributed to each other's success. Ive has always been in contact with Jobs and speaks the same language as him, Antonelli said, and they clearly have chemistry.
Don Norman, who worked at Apple in the '90s as vice president of the company's advanced technology group, said that while Ive had good design ideas "sitting on the shelves," he needed Jobs to get those designs off the shelves.
"Jony has always been Jony — brilliant," Norman said. "What he needed was a Steve Jobs to say, 'Make this happen.'"
Now, the test will be whether Cook can continue to keep that focus at Apple and encourage Ive to continue creating hits.
In a sense, the challenge won't be as difficult as it had been in the 1990s. Now that Apple has developed a style, it can build on it rather than try to reimagine it with each new product.
And that, Norman says, is now in Apple's DNA.
Dallas Gold and Silver Exchange Launches usbullionexchange.com; New Site to Provide Free Real Time Prices on Over 250 Precious Metals Products.
DALLAS, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange, Inc. (Amex: DLS and DLS.EC) announced that its free Internet site, www.usbullionexchange.com has opened. The site was developed because of growing interest in precious metals products by those concerned about potential unfavorable events caused by the Y2K problem. William Oyster, President of Dallas Gold & Silver said, "over the last year interest in precious metals products has grown substantially and we wanted to provide a useful way for our customers to access real prices of available precious metals products. While we are not alarmists about Y2K, our customers know that precious metals have always served as a secure asset in times of distress. We have experienced a substantial increase in demand for gold, silver, platinum and palladium products. Now our customers and others interested in these products can access real time prices without any cost." www.usbullionexchange.com joins Dallas Gold and Silver's unique auction and person-to-person trading site for jewelry, fine watches, diamonds and precious metals products at http://www.dgse.com.
"The Internet continues to grow in importance for our core businesses," said Oyster. "The launch of www.usbullionexchange.com expands our offerings and is another step in making Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange a one stop portal for the auction and sale of jewelry, diamonds, fine watches, and precious metals. Our new site will be free to consumers and will be supported entirely by industry and third party advertising."
With the anticipated June launch of its third site www.FirstJewelryAuctions.com, Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange will have what is believed to be one of the broadest offerings on the Internet involving jewelry, fine watches, diamonds and precious metals. The new site will be significantly larger than the existing auction site and will have continuous auctions on thousands of jewelry and related products. Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange's proprietary Virtual Auctioneer software, which was featured in a recent Information Week story on electronic commerce, will power this new site. The new site employs a unique participant model and will be the first auction site to allow individuals and professionals from the jewelry industry to meet anonymously in an auction and trading environment.
