Fed: Touretski's wife to fight against giving prosecution eviden
CANBERRA, Aug 16 AAP - Swim coach Gennadi Touretski's wife will fight moves to compel
her to give evidence for the prosecution in her husband's case, a court was told today.
Touretski, 51, the Russian-born coach of Olympic gold medallists Alex Popov and Michael
Klim, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing the banned steroid Stanozolol.
A hearing is set down for October 15 to 18.
Prosecutor Ken Archer told the ACT Magistrates Court that Inna (Inna) Touretski has
indicated she would raise the issue of whether she can be compelled to give evidence for
the prosecution.
Magistrate Michael Somes said he would hear an outline of the prosecution's case and
the issue of whether Mrs Touretski can be compelled to give evidence on September 3.
The prosecution intended to subpoena Mrs Touretski for that date, Mr Archer said.
The charge followed a police investigation of a burglary at Touretski's home in the
Canberra suburb of Bruce, during which a safe containing Olympic and Commonwealth medals
was stolen.
The safe was later found dumped in a Canberra pond.
Touretski was suspended on full pay from his duties at the Australian Institute of Sport.
