NEW YORK -- Several major drug chains are testing a system that could have an impact on the way the hair coloring category is merchandised.

The Hair-Color-Mix machine from Sempre Gmbh has the potential to significantly affect the quantity of hair color SKUs stocked by retailers. The machine can produce and dispense more than 500 different ready-to-use colors. After a customer selects a desired shade the system mixes pigments in a way that is similar to the process in paint-mixing machines. The device then dispenses the mixture into a bottle.
